Turn off noise reduction

For those planning on taking Vulcanoid images with a digital camera remember this important tip: turn off noise reduction!

OK, besides removing the lens cap :) turning off any camera noise reduction is critical. That tiny speck that noise reduction may smooth out could have been a Vulcanoid!

I agree with the poster here. But don't forget to not do any noise reduction when you importing the image from your camera to your computer. Some software tools do smoothing and other image enhancement techniques by default.

Of course, raw image format (if your camera can produce them) is better. Your image software likely has a raw converter. Check your raw conversion software settings to ensure that noise reduction / smoothing / and other "make it look nice" modes are turned off.

And as someone else said, keep your original raw image (or whatever format your camera / CCD / CMOS censor takes) in its original unaltered state. Burn your original image to a CD-ROM for safe keeping before you even begin to look at it with software (that may alter it without your knowledge).

Take raw digital SLR camera images

For those taking images with digital cameras, I recommend that you take the images in raw mode.  Camera raw will preserve as much detail as it can about what the camera censor saw during the exposure.

Many digital SLR camers, by default, produce JPEG images.  Before your shoot (or take zenith test images), change the image format to raw.  You can always convert raw images to some common format later.  When you preserve your raw image, you preserve what many call your digital negative.
